When you hear about snoring do you, like most people associate it with men? Do you think it is a testosterone or male issue? One thing is certain snoring is not sexy and women would be mortified to be caught doing it. Guys, however do not seem to be even slightly embarrassed while a woman would feel a degree of shame to be caught snoring.
Truth be told women are just as prone to snoring, in fact the chances of a female having a snoring issue is just as high as it is for men. When a woman is pregnant and begins to noticeably snore, it can be a sign of high blood pressure and in turn pre-eclamsia. If not treated this can be a serious complication for mother and child both.
Originally, it was believed that men who snored could possibly have heart disease. Recent research has proven that snoring in women can signal hypertension and heart disease as well. This is most likely because snoring interferes with getting enough oxygen.
There are several things that can contribute to snoring including high cholesterol, sleep positions, smoking, alcohol consumption and being overweight. It is also believed that oral contraceptives can contribute too.
The biggest group of women who suffer from snoring are women who are middle aged and a bit overweight. Of course, these numbers are hard to calculate since women are more inclined to fib about their snoring problem.
Most females will try to fix the problem at home with old home remedies instead of seeing a physician. They may purchase earplugs for family members and try to stay on their side during the night as sleeping on your back tends to make snoring worse. Some may even go so far as to sew a tennis ball into her nightgown.
The idea is if you happen to roll over at night and end up on your back the tennis ball will encourage a change in position.
Other things that may lessen a woman's chances of snoring problems are losing weight and avoiding alcohol. Should those fail as well it is a good idea to call your physician.
